The straight stem design on which the VarioLoc® stem is based has been successful in hip arthroplasty for more than a quarter of a century. The principle of a self-locking double-taper femoral stem was originally described by M. E. Müller. Together with the anatomical curvature of the femur, the bone contact in the frontal plane reinforces the wedging in the sagittal plane. Simplicity and excellent results of similar stems (Swedish Hip Arthroplasty Registry: 10-year survival rate 97.8%) make this implant standard in hip replacement.
